Mozart was composing symphonies right from his early years, the first one dating back to 1764: he was then eight years old.Written in 1788, the dramatic Symphony No.40 is one of Mozart's major masterpieces. Despite its lightweight orchestration, without trumpets or drums, it is a forceful, energetic piece whose four movements are pervaded by a sombre atmosphere of uneasy, sometimes anguished, tension.Of admirable balance and proportions, the Symphony No.41, "Jupiter", is Mozart's last, also dating from 1788. With the heroic character of its four movements, together with its warmth and elegance, it makes an impression of ideal classicality. The Allegro molto finale has a masterly coda containing a superb fugal episode, treated by Mozart in an extraordinarily bold manner.
