Despite lacking a mouse, the iPhone has become the unlikely saviour of the point-and-click adventure genre in recent years. We've seen a flood of brilliant titles appear, including Monkey Island, Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars. Now it's the turn of the latter game's sequel to get the iOS treatment, and thankfully it's every bit as impressive as its predecessor.

The likeable but often oafish George Stobbart is once again the main character, but instead of digging into the shadowy history of the Templars he's poking around deepest, darkest South America attempting to uncover a mysterious conspiracy, involving ancient Mayan temples and solar eclipses. His lady-friend Nicole Collard also comes along for the ride, and it's her kidnapping at the start of the game, which sets wheels into motion.

The opening of Broken Sword 2 gives a pretty good indication of what's to follow. Tied to a chair and trapped in a slowly burning room with a deadly spider approaching, you have to think fast in order to survive. Kicking away the bottom of a bookcase is your first option, and in doing so you simultaneously squash the spider and reveal the means of your escape – a sharp metal bracket on the wall. Having used this to free yourself from the confines of the chair, you then have to find a way of extinguishing the flames.
