In this land of extremes, only the most determined animals survive in NATURE's KALAHARI: THE GREAT THIRSTLAND. It's been 20 years since the Boteti River has brought substantial water to the grasslands of the Kalahari. Dust, vegetation, and sand dominate the landscape as the wildlife hides from the relentless summer sun and the cold winter nights. Some sleep for years, entombed in protective cases, lying dormant and waiting for water to come. But most live a nomadic existence, surviving by seeking out moisture under the sand, or by making the most of their adaptations.

The Kalahari stretches from Namibia and Botswana into South Africa, filling this expanse with trees, shrubs, and even forests. For all of its reputation as a desert, the lands around the Magkadikadi Salt Pans are vast savannas. In terms of temperature and rainfall, they might as well be plains on the surface of the moon. Until the storms come.

In an instant, the clouds open up, and the smallest drop of rain breathes new life into the dry earth. Elephants, zebras, and wildebeest play and mate on the banks of the now-overflowing pools. Flamingos crowd the skies, somehow knowing when to travel over 1,000 miles to arrive just in time. Life explodes in the aftermath of the thunderstorm, as new generations are born. However, the time for rejoicing and replenishment is short, for the water soon recedes.
