BBC - Horizon - Einsteins Equation Of Life And Death
Part 2 of a Horizon special on Albert Einstein
Broadcast date: 27th January, 2005
Genre: Documentary
Plot:In the summer of 1939 Albert Einstein was on holiday in a small resorttown on the tip of Long Island. His peaceful summer, however, was aboutto be shattered by a visit from an old friend and colleague from hisyears in Berlin. The visitor was the physicist Leo Szilard. He had cometo tell Einstein that he feared the Nazis could soon be in possession ofa terrible new weapon and that something had to be done.
Szilardbelieved that recent scientific breakthroughs meant it was now possibleto convert mass into energy. And that this could be used to make abomb. If this were to happen, it would be a terrible realisation of thelaw of nature Einstein had discovered some 34 years earlier.
September1905 was Einsteins miracle year. While working as a patents clerk inthe Swiss capital Berne Einstein submitted a three-page supplement tohis special theory of relativity, published earlier that year. In thosepages he derived the most famous equation of all time; e=mcA?, energy isequal to mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.
Theequation showed that mass and energy were related and that one could, intheory, be transformed into the other. But because the speed of lightsquared is such a huge number, it meant that even a small amount of masscould potentially be converted into a huge amount of energy. Ever sincethe discovery of radioactivity in the late 19th century, scientists hadrealised that the atomic nucleus could contain a large amount ofenergy. Einsteins revolutionary equation showed them, for the firsttime, just how much there was.
However, at the time Einsteindoubted whether that energy could ever be released. By 1935 he wasconvinced it would never be practical. At the Winter Session of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science in Pittsburgh, he isquoted as telling journalists: The likelihood of transforming matterinto energy is something akin to shooting birds in the dark in a countrywhere there are only a few birds.
Einstein was so scepticalbecause attempts to break open the atomic nucleus always required morefar energy be put in than was ever released. Nuclear physicists likeErnest Rutherford were exploring the structure of the atom by bombardingatomic nuclei with alpha particles. Even when machines were built toaccelerate the alpha particles to ever higher speeds they had onlylimited success in breaking apart the nucleus. In 1933 Rutherforddismissed talk of atomic power as moonshine.
