Cengiz Baysal is a Turkish jazz drummer, who began to play at the age of twelve. As being the house drummer for the prestigious Istanbul Jazz Center, he had the chance to work with great artists such as; Lee Konitz, Mark Murphy, Dave Samuels, Alan Harris, Eve Cornelius, Chip Crawford, Dena De Rose and Paula West. Cengiz plays with the talented jazz musicians of Turkey in this album, as being the leader. Music inside can be described as fusion; there're colors of rock, funk and sometimes implications to Turkish traditional music, as well as jazz harmonies, improvisations. Especially on Fender Rhodes, Chick Corea's high level voicings can be heard from Serkan. Imer, one of the rare Turkish jazz musicians who never decreases his expression force on any sentence; plays great here again, on tracks #2 and 8. Guitarist Ercument also plays modern enough, without bothering. The track that I found most successfull in this album is #2, "Blues 99"; first seems like it's based on the standard 12-bar-blues, but with the 9th measure, song skips to a different place, which surprises the listener. Generaly, a listenable fusion album from bebop to free improvisation, which can be recommended to the fusion jazz listeners. ~O.D.
