Getinside the mind of the genius behind one of the most unconventionalweapons of WWII.In 1943 a squadron of Lancaster bombers staged one ofthe most audacious raids in history--destroying two gigantic dams inGermanys industrial heartland and cutting the water supply to armsfactories--with a revolutionary bouncing bomb invented by Britishengineer Barnes Wallis.

Wallis and the pilots of 617 Squadron--a livelymix of Britons, Australians, Americans, and Canadians--were hailed asheroes and dealt a mighty blow to the German war machine. Now, NOVAre-creates the extreme engineering challenges faced by Wallis and thepilots with the aid of spectacular experiments. Each represents atechnical challenge that the Dambusters had to solve to make theirmission a success. A crack team of experts--from dam engineers toexplosives specialists--will step into the shoes of the Dambusters andattempt to overcome each obstacle in turn. They will adapt a vintage DC4to carry a bomb the size of an oil drum; train to drop it from adangerously low altitude in pitch darkness; get it to bounce overobstacles and onto the target; and finally, at a test site in Canadawith a 1:6 scale model of one of the German dams, try to repeat history.
