It follows the efforts of a US dermatologist, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland, who travels to Dede's home village south of Jakarta to investigate the condition and offer treatment which possibly could transform his life. The 'roots' began growing in Dede's teens after he cut his knee in an accident. They spread with terrifying speed and he was left unable to carry out everyday tasks. He was sacked from his job, his wife left him and he was forced to join a local 'freak show' in order to put food on the table for his two children. Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.
Dr Gaspari provided hope after tests on the lesions appeared to show Dede's condition was caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers. The physician believes Dede has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts. The virus was therefore able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths - known as 'cutaneous horns' - on his hands and feet. The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million, according to Dr Gaspari.Extraordinary People is a television documentary series broadcast on Five in the United Kingdom. Each programme follows the lives of people with a rare medical condition or unusual ability. People featured have or had rare illnesses.
