Derek Paravicini (born 1979) is an English autistic savant and a musical prodigy. He also has severe learning disabilities and is blind. He has from a very young age had a remarkable almost unique innate ability to play piano technically perfect. Paravicini was born extremely prematurely, at 25 weeks. His blindness was caused by oxygen therapy given during his time in a neonatal intensive care unit. This also affected his developing brain, resulting in his severe learning disability. He also has autism.He has a rare gift called absolute pitch and can play a piece of music perfectly after hearing it only once he is better at doing this than any other pianist in the world. He began playing the piano by the age of two and started playing important concerts at ten and has subsequently performed in front of and met royalty and international celebrities and won multiple awards.This film shows his journey to Las Vegas to play in a charity concert with another savant, Rex Lewis-Clack and shows how he has developed his innate ability from as a child being able to play piano technically perfect but without emotion to being able to as an adult being able to play improvised early twentieth century American jazz with warmth and feeling at a quality comparable with the best pianists of the last century in a similar style to Art Tatum who was also blind.
