The game begins with the fact that a young man with unpronounceable name Guybrush Threepwood (Guybrush Threepwood), who wants to become a pirate, appears on the Caribbean island of Melee (Fr. melee, as well as landfill). Three pirate leader appointed him three tasks to find the treasure, steal the idol from the mansion of the governor of the island Elaine Marley (Elaine Marley) and defeat the master of fencing. But as soon as Guybrush performs third task, a pirate ghost LeChaka (LeChuck) kidnaps Elaine and takes her to the island of the Apes (Monkey Island).
Guybrush, by the time involved in a romantic relationship with Elaine, gaining a team of three people who buys from a dealer of second hand ships and ship Stan goes in search of a mysterious island, hoping to save the governor. Monkey Island Guybrush meets a shipwrecked hermit named Herman Tufrot ( Herman Toothrot), and discovers a settlement of cannibals vegetarians, who help him find a cure for phantom teams LeChaka.
