Edward Emerson Barnard's Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way was originally published in two volumes in 1927. Together these volumes contained a wealth of information, including photographic plates of the most interesting portions of the Milky Way, descriptive text, charts, and data. Only 700 copies were printed, making the original edition a collector's item. Reproduced in print for the first time, this edition combines both volumes of Barnard's Atlas.

This lively and informative book offers beginning readers a simple introduction to the Milky Way. About the Author Gregory L. Vogt began his professional career as a science teacher. He later joined NASA's education programs, teaching students and teachers about space exploration. He works in outreach programs for the Kennedy Space Center. He is also the principal investigator for an educational grant with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. Vogt has written more than seventy science books for children.

Volume 18 continues the Reviews in Modern Astronomy with twelve invited reviews and highlight contributions which were presented during the International Scientific Conference of the Astronomical Society on the topic "From Cosmological Structures to the Milky Way", held in Prague, Czech Republic, September 20 to 25, 2004.
