As US troops were committed in ever-increasing numbers in the 1960 s to protect South Vietnam from Communist takeover, it became clear they faced a double enemy in both the Viet Cong and the inhospitable South-East Asian terrain. The helicopter turned the tide, revolutionizing the face of warfare at a stroke and laying down a blueprint for the future. With much previously-classified film footage shot both on the ground and in the air, this program examines the integral role played by the helicopter.

The events leading up to, on, and following January 31, 1968 made military history, with a devastating event known as the Tet Offensive. Staged by the National Liberation Front guerrillas (Viet Cong) and North Vietnam Army troops as a surprise attack against the republic of South Vietnam, the Tet Offensive found General Nguyen Giap staging faux battles in the South Vietnamese countryside, to lure American and South Vietnamese soldiers away from Saigon and other cities, and render those areas more vulnerable. The tactic not only worked, but virtually paved the way for the April 1975 fall of Saigon - delivering a deafening blow from which the area never recovered. As narrated by Gavid McFadyen (TREASURE SEEKERS), the documentary program BATTLEFIELD VIETNAM: TET! chronicles these events in three installments: "Countdown to Tet," "The Tet Offensive" and "The Fall of Saigon," with biographical studies of the various military leaders, discussions of troop deployments, and a detailed chronicle of the offensive itself.

During the early years of resistance against French colonial forces, the Peoples Army of Vietnam (PAVN) was made up of poorly equipped and trained ground forces. The most important branches of the military — artillery, signal corps and pioneer units — had a simple structure and only rudimentary equipment. At the beginning of 1949 General Vo Nguyen Giap. Commander-in-Chief of the Ministry of Defense; Brigadier General Hoang Van Thai. Chief of Staff; and Phan Phac. Chief of Military Training, approached Ho Chi Minh concerning the establishment of a Vietnamese Air Force and Navy.

Why Intelligence Fails: Lessons from the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq War by Robert Jervis
C,,ne,l Un,v Pr | ISBN: 0801478065 | 2010 | PDF | 248 pages | 1 MB
The U.S. government spends enormous resources each year on the gathering and analysis of intelligence, yet the history of American foreign policy is littered with missteps and misunderstandings that have resulted from intelligence failures. In Why Intelligence Fails, Robert Jervis examines the politics and psychology of two of the more spectacular intelligence failures in recent memory: the mistaken belief that the regime of the Shah in Iran was secure and stable in 1978, and the claim that Iraq had active WMD programs in 2002.

In this spellbinding new history, David Goldfield offers the first major new interpretation of the Civil War era since James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Where past scholars have limned the war as a triumph of freedom, Goldfield sees it as America's greatest failure: the result of a breakdown caused by the infusion of evangelical religion into the public sphere. As the Second GreatAwakening surged through America, political questions became matters of good and evil to be fought to the death.
