In this 1969 concert, Jimmy Smith was still at the top of his game. Trim and dapper, his enthusiasm in his playing is obvious from the start. The camera angles give us special insight into how Jimmy Smith did the remarkable things he did. Watching his performance of -The Sermon- is indeed special. We are permitted to see the entire instrument. Watching his left hand walk the bass on the lower manual is to witness a technique he invented. When he begins the drone with his right thumb and begins to improvise with the remaining fingers, he gets fired up and deeply into the feeling. This is one great piece of jazz video.
He was a virtuoso soloist, an innovative combo leader, a best-selling recording artist and one of the four or five greatest jazz musicians of the last fifty years.

The folks at Mobile Fidelity pay their rent by releasing a lot of disposable pop, but then they redeem themselves with labors of love such as this. Sonically, there is not that much to shout about here, but that is not the point. The fact that this CD is eminently listenable shows that a lot of work went into getting it ready for release, because I cannot imagine that they started out with the best master tape in the world. Some of the music sounds a bit corny (that brings to mind an interesting blindfold test in a recent issue of Downbeat wherein along with dropping several other little bombshell statements, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (April 18 1924 - September 10, 2005) was a Louisiana and Texan American blues musician. He was a highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, who played an impressive array of instruments such as guitar, fiddle, mandolin, viola as well as harmonica and drums. criticizes Armstrong for never really moving beyond Dixieland music),
but once you just relax a little bit and start enjoying the show, with Louis doing plenty of singing along with some shucking and jiving, all your troubles just seem to fade away. Thank you, Mobile Fidelity, for making this available.-- KWN
