From the age of fourteen to twenty-five, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was in the service of the Archbishop at the Court Orchestra in Salzburg, his native city. The child prodigy so often admired at royal courts and in the great cities was already an accomplished musician. The conservative milieu of the city and the autocratic personality of his employer weighed heavily on Mozart. On the other hand, the time spent in Salzburg was valuable to him as regards personal contacts, many of which had already been established by his parents. The friendship with the family of the mayor, the Haffners (or more correctly, Hafners), was among them. The Haffner's daughter Liserl was to be married on 22 July 1776 and for the pre-wedding celebration her brother Sigmund commissioned his friend Mozart to write a festive composition known today as the Haffner Serenade.
