The Chicago label, established by Polish immigrant brothers Phil and Leonard Chess, brought the thrill of artists as diverse as Sunnyland Slim, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf to white audiences for the first time. Chess also nurtured some of the greatest doo-wop combos, including the Moonglows, Flamingos and Dells, as well as the twin linchpins of the music that would inspire virtually every white rock combo of the Sixties, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.
