The 'roots' began growing in Dede's teens after he cut his knee in an accident. They spread with terrifying speed and he was left unable to carry out everyday tasks. He was sacked from his job, his wife left him and he was forced to join a local 'freak show' in order to put food on the table for his two children. Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.
